The Bartram family has been mining for our National Gemstone for over 85 years on all the major Australian opal fields.
Family members have undertaken epic journeys to reach the opal fields, trudging for miles through the bush, driving for days in Model T Ford motor cars, travelling on the original Ghan train, living underground, and digging shafts and drives using picks and shovels.
They know opals, and this book tells their stories, with many old photos and copies of original letters that have never been seen publicly before.
John Walter 'Pop' Bartram was there at the beginning at Andamooka. Snow and Syd Bartram and Bern Grund were there at the very beginning of mining at the fabulous Eight Mile field at Coober Pedy. Snow and Syd Bartram were there at Glengarry from the beginning and had claims in the centre of Millionaires Gully.
In 2018 the Bartram family made the fabulous Fire of Australia Opal available to the South Australian Museum for their Opal Collection.

Some years ago Don decided to write a book to record the amazing stories of the 85 years of opal mining of his immediate and extended family. This is now a permanent and valuable archive of this opal mining history from the earliest days to the present.
Don has used old family photographs and early letters which have never been seen publicly before in this book, which will enlarge the understanding and love of all of those interested in the history of our early opal mining pioneers.
